The Yellow Moon
The Yellow Moon is crafted from Diospyros Malabarica, commonly known as the Gaub Tree, Malabar Ebony, Black-and-White Ebony, or Pale Moon Ebony. This rare species of flowering tree in the Ebenacea family is renowned for its distinctive black, irregular stripes against a tan or white background.
The particular timber we selected for this ukulele features a unique pale yellow background, which inspired the name “Yellow Moon Ebony.” This feature further inspired us to create a series of ukuleles titled “The Yellow Moon,” each adorned with head inlays depicting a night sky over the ocean, featuring a prominent yellow moon and its reflection on the rippling water. The sky and water elements were meticulously chosen from appropriate sections of the Yellow Moon Ebony, while the moon and its reflection were crafted from Ceylon Satinwood. Additionally, one or two palm trees were added in silhouette to complete the simple yet elegant design. We also added a new rosette and cool black and white Purfling.
To accentuate the yellow hue of the Ebony, Alaskan Yellow Cedar was incorporated for both the top and neck. This exquisite wood boasts an impressive ring count of over 80 per inch and possesses the necessary stiffness for the neck, and a superb tap tone making it an ideal choice for the top. The harmonious combination of Yellow Moon Ebony and Alaskan Yellow Cedar results in a captivating instrument that will undoubtedly inspire musicians for generations to come.
